The initially calm atmosphere of the exposition gradually gives way to agitation, as arpeggios run from one instrument to the next, underscored by arpeggiated pizzicato chords. The piece comes to a close on a more tranquil note, with a sustained unison note in the viola and cello, albeit slightly disrupted by the violin's pizzicato.
